Carburetor overflow problem
Here: Carburetor in Toyota KE70 Roadside - repair
Problem:
The car runs smoothly but suddenly the engine becomes unequal running until the car stops totally. After checking the petrol and spark plugs, which are o.k., the next suspect is the petrol pump. Checking the petrol pump showed that the pump is working.
What else can be the problem?
Answer:
The problem can be the carburetor. It is possibly an overflow problem.
How to repair this?
First: No open fire, no smoking please, fire danger !
Remove the air filter. Take off the petrol pipe from the carburetor. Then loosen the top screws which are holding the top cover of the carburetor, for about 1 cm ( 0.4 inch ). Be careful, that the small pump cylinder in the carburetor don't jump out. Fix the lever, which is connected to the pump cylinder, temporary with wire or similar. Inside the pump cylinder is a spring and difficult to fix back.
You can remove overflow petrol by opening the screw at the outside of the carburetor directly below the floating chamber.
Then try to move the floating ball carefully with a thin wire up and down to move the inlet valve needle. With a handmade plastic- or rubber pump, connected to a small piece of plastic pipe, you can blow pressure air through the inlet valve to remove any dirt which may effect the functioning of the valve.
After that you can test the function of the valve also with the same pump. You can feel a clear difference at the air pump between closed inlet valve and open inlet valve.
After the valve is working, screw back the top cover of the carburetor, fix the petrol pipe back and also the air filter and hopefully the engine is working. If not, a general cleaning or overhaul of the carburetor may be required.
