Jicama is a plant, which grows in tropical and subtropical regions. It has large round tubers which are edible and used as vegetable. Leaves, stems and seeds of the plant contain rotenone which is a natural insecticide and is poisonous. Farmers wear hand gloves when they cut stems or pods of the plants. Other names for jicama are yam bean, Mexican turnip and sengkuang. The jicama is planted in Mexico, Central America, India, Malaysia, China. The time from sowing till harvest is about 6 month. The scientific name is Pachyrrhizus erosus or tuberosus.
