Teak is one of the hardest and most insect resistant wood in nature. It comes from the teak tree, which grows in tropical and subtropical regions. It takes about 15 to 20 years until teak trees can be felled and used as hardwood. Not only the wood is hard, also the seeds and the leaves are relatively hard. Flowers of the teak tree shown here are small, about 0.5 cm in diameter and white and yellow in color. These here come from a 10 meter tall teak tree. |

Fruits of the teak tree are about 2 cm in diameter. They contain, when ripe, a harder seed of about 1 cm in diameter. From this seed a new teak tree can grow. In the author's experiments 2 seeds germinated (from 10 seeds) after 15 days . The new plants reached a height of 20 cm after 6 month. Now ( the trees are 2 years and 6 month old ) one tree is about 1.7 m high and the other tree 3 m high. The difference is mainly due to a different time of replanting and the planting at different places. |
Note: 1 cm = 0.4 inch ; 1 m = 3.3 feet |
