Sugar cane

Sugar cane is a grass plant

It grows as a very tall grass, about 2 to 5 m high and with a strong stem (stalk). Stem diameter is about 3 to 5 cm.
It contains a high amount of sugar ( about 12 to 18% ).
The stem is divided by nodes into internodes. Each node carries a bud.

The stem was cut with a saw. Stem diameter here is about 3.5 cm.

Where sugar cane grows

Sugar cane grows in tropical and semitropical countries. The temperature should be between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall per year should be about 150 to 300 cm.

 

How to plant sugar cane

You can plant sugar cane by stem cuttings. Place stem cuttings of 0.3 to 0.5 m length slightly under the soil. After a few weeks time new shoots will come up from the buds.
